Last night, Gina and I went to The Saddle Rack, California's Premiere Nightclub. Which, quite frankly, is a hysterical name for a really big barn that has a bull, a shot chair and loads of country music. It should also be known that it's 45 minutes outside the city and nobody ever wants to go with us because, well, it's silly that we live in one of the best cities in the world and we drive outside of it to go to a bar. But, a live country band, and cowboys in boots and tight jeans is strangely attractive. Anyway, somewhere along the way we saw that on Wednesday nights they have Beirut tournaments....clearly we thought this was a fantastic idea. Last night we decided to make the trek. Upon arrival we notice that there are like 4 cars in the enormous parking lot. We park for a few minutes and then decide to drive to a nearby gas station to go to the bathroom. We drive back and we watch car after car pull in, but, they ALL work there! Each person proceeds to get out of their car, with a red Saddle Rack shirt on, and go inside. We decide that we'll just make the push...at least there will be booze. We walk to the door and as soon as we touch the door handle we are told that they are not open yet. We, looking like fools, turn around and walk back to the car. After waiting till 7:00 (and after watching a few people go in) we head to the door again. The place is dark, because apparently even though they are open they are saving electricity. We ask about Beirut and the hostess says "she'll set it up for us as soon as she is done eating her dinner." Ok, I guess we'll wait for her, we don't have much of a choice. On Wednesdays, if you play Beirut, you buy one beer, get one free. Let it be known that this was the coolest thing about the whole night. Gina and I proceed to play one game of Beirut and decide that we want to watch the 30 middle aged women who have shown up learn to how to do The Whiskey Girl. Oh, did I forget to mention that they teach line dancing?? So, since we clearly weren't going to participate in the dancing, although I think Gina wanted to, but there was no way in hell I was going out on that dance floor, we decided to get back in the jeep and drive the 45 minutes home. Needless to say, we now know that Wednesday nights at the Rack are not for everyone (unless of course, you are a middle aged woman, and then in that case, it's perfect).
